Sync
Enhancing the cooking experience through music co-creation.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
Digital innovation has changed a lot of aspects of our habits. Could digitalisation shape the way we consider food? What kind of new experiences, new tools and appliances can we imagine for tomorrow? What new services can be born from this?
Could simple cooking make someone a music DJ?
CONCEPT
The design is inspired by the concept of a DJ: users can blend music tracks together through the normal cooking routine. This creates a unique and fresh soundtrack with every session, guaranteeing a cooking experience that is hyped-up and groove-worthy.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
MEET YOUR NEW INSTRUMENTS
Sync plays on the analog between kitchen utensils and instruments. Just as a musician makes his music with his instruments, so does a chef create his art with his utensils.
KITCHEN INSTRUMENTS: A TECHNICAL POSSIBILITY
The core challenge was to bridge the interactions and gestures with kitchen utensils with a digital music platform. This is possible through simple motion sensors and LEDs for user feedback.
SETTING THE STAGE FOR SHOWTIME
Prior to their cooking session, users simple activate their cooking equipment that have been paired with the "Sync" app and customize the matches between the utensils and desired instrument sounds. This creates room for thousands of possibilities when it comes to music creation.
NEVER A LONELY ENDEAVOUR
Sync enables users to share their music creations online with other music lovers and home cooks, bringing about a communal element to the art of cooking and music-making. It envisions a future where users are even able to co-create music with one another, whether in person or online.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
ABSTRACT
This project is the outcome of a speculative design studio, “Fooding 2.0”. The studio aims to re-imagine the future of food experiences, given the trends and advancements in food technologies. This course focuses on building a visionary design hypothesis, experimenting with coherence on different levels of the project (product to service, detail to system), and communicating innovative ideas with simplicity.
